Can anyone Fly Drones Commercially?
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires that a remote pilot who wishes to fly a Small Unmanned Aircraft System (sUAS) for commercial reasons be accredited with a Remote Pilot Certificate.
What Counts as Commercial Use?
Basically, anything that you or someone else can or will make money off of. So if you're flying purely for fun and there will be no monetary interests associated with your flight, go for it! Just stay out of restricted airspace - we'll get to that later. Anyone who does not posses a Remote Pilot Certificate is legally forbidden from using their drone(s) for anything more than hobby flying. The rules go so far as to say a rancher should not check the status of his cattle using a sUAS without first having a Remote Pilot Certificate, as the sUAS is being used in such a way that concerns the farmer's business interests.
What is a Remote Pilot Certificate?
The Remote Pilot Certificate is an accreditation from the FAA which allows a sUAS operator to flight his or her drone for commercial interests. It also offers the certificate holder certain advantages over hobbyists, including the ability to apply for airspace waivers through the FAA. The Remote Pilot Certificate is earned by passing an exam hosted at an FAA appointed Knowledge Testing Center, of which there are 3 in the state of North Dakota. The exam is taken using a computer system inside a secure video-monitored room. Exam content includes multiple choice questions regarding complex avionic fundamentals such as air space regulations and how to read aviation charts.
How Did you get your Certificate?
Northern Lights Digital, LLC's sUAS pilot studied for several days before attending a remote pilot class hosted in Fargo, ND. He passed his scheduled exam the next day after only one attempt.
How Long is A Certificate Valid For?
A Remote Pilot Certificate is valid for 24 months from the date it was issued.
Where Can you Fly?
Northern Lights Digital, LLC can fly in Class G airspace without previous consent from the FAA. All other classes of airspace require special permission from the FAA.
